Colombian Families Living Under Extreme Poverty Receive LifeStraw  Filters
Families of extreme poverty and communitarian mothers of the Instituto Colombiano de Bienestar Familiar were given 3,300 LifeStraw® Family water filters. The filters were distributed in 11 rural towns in the states of Bituima, Topaipi, El Peñon, Pacho, Agua de Dios, among others. The distribution was part of Millennium Development Goal programs related to safe water supply. It was led by Fundaset and the government of Cundinamarca state. In addition, the government’s health ministry tested samples of water treated with the LifeStraw® filters and confirmed the microbiological efficiency of the filters.

Children in schools and school restaurants in Colombian rural zones without access to safe drinking water, and who have been victims of conflict, were given 40 LifeStraw® Community filters by the World Food Program with Departamento de la Prosperidad Social funds. Municipalities that received the filters include Tibú, Gabarra (Norte de Santander), Buenaventura (Valle), López de Micay, Mercader, Buenos Aires (Cauca).

Families of the Embera indigenous community who were forcibly displaced by Colombian armed conflict have been accepted into the Program of Victims Assistance and Returning Support of the city hall of Medellín. They received 10 LifeStraw® Community filters as part of the program of food safety and quality of life for the returning communities.

LifeStraw Community Tested and Approved by a Municipality in Northeastern Brazil

The mayor of Sao Lourenço da Mata, interior of Pernambuco state, was very concerned about the water in the schools. So, when Vestergaard presented LifeStraw® Community to him as an option to provide pure and safe water in an easy way to the students, the local government decided to run a test, with one LifeStraw® Community unit in one of the schools. After 4 months, the principal of that school reported that children like and regularly use the water purifier. He said that he would need four units in that school to provide a sufficient quantity of clean water to all students. The mayor is now preparing a project to buy LifeStraw® Community for all schools in Sao Lourenço da Mata in 2014.

8,000 LifeStraw® Family water filters were distributed to Wayúus Indian communities in the rural zones of Riohacha, Maicao, Manaure and Uribia in the state of La Guajira. The filters reached 395 Indian communities, to improve the quality of the water that the residents drink from ponds and improve the overall health of the Wayúu communities. The distribution was made by the La Guajira government’s Secretary of Indian Affairs as part of "The Water Quality is First" program.

One of the first contacts made in Brazil in 2012 was with the NGO TETCHO, whose mission is to bring dignity, self-respect and motivation for development to people living in poor housing conditions. TETCHO makes interventions in peri-urban communities like slums, proposing and gathering resident approval and participation to construct new house settings from which the households can rebuild their lives. Vestergaard presented both LifeStraw® Community and LifeStraw® Family. TETCHO decided to test LifeStraw® Family during one of their constructions in a slum in Sao Paulo. Their technical team, based in Chile, came to verify the functioning, the acceptability and feasibility of adoption. LifeStraw® Family was approved, and can now be included in projects as TETCHO approaches new communities which need a safe water supply.

The outbreak of infections by the presence of “Vibrio cholerae O1 Ogawa” in the water in the Huasteca region, mainly in the state of Hidalgo in central Mexico, affected areas with poor infrastructure and limited availability of potable water. But, thanks to preventive measures taken by health and water authorities at the national and state level, including the distribution of LifeStraw® Family and LifeStraw® Community purifying filters for homes and schools, among other measures, the further spread of infections has been decreased. Now, close to 50,000 people have access to safe water for approximately three years using LifeStraw®.

In early July 2013, as part of the process of presenting and testing LifeStraw® water purifiers  to stakeholders in Brazil, Vestergaard was introduced to a community of small farmers in the interior of Amazonas, which is around 300 km from Manaus, the capital. Residents of the households were called for a meeting in the community center, and the 30 people who attended, including leaders, common participants and government technicians, could check the functioning of both LifeStraw® Family and LifeStraw® Community. The next step is to run a pilot inside this community, as a process to establish the LifeStraw® purifiers as a solution to supplying pure and safe water to distant communities like this one.

Marginalized People in Northern Mexico Receive LifeStraw®

The Sierra Tarahumara in the State of Chihuahua, in northern Mexico, is an area with economic lag and inaccessibility, with a dispersed population throughout the region because of its geography. In 2013, with the support of the Ministry of Health of the state government, more than 1,000 people in the area, including children and the elderly, have safe water in their homes and schools as a result of the distribution of 100 LifeStraw® Family filters and 13 Lifestraw® Community. This is a first step in a broader project planned in 2014 to benefit this area that has a high amount of marginalization.

Victims of the Rainy Season in Colombia receive LifeStraw® Family

Following the heavy rainy season in 2011, many families in rural towns of Colombia have lived with unsafe drinking water. Now, they have access to safe drinking water after the distribution 9,000 LifeStraw® Family water filters was made to families in 62 rural towns, mainly on the Atlantic and Pacific Coasts and in the Amazon rain forest, the areas that were hit the hardest. In all, 9,000 families were given the LifeStraw® water purifiers. The distribution was led by the Colombia Humanitaria and Public Safety Department as part of the Colombia government’s Emergency Employment program.

These filters are providing access to safe drinking water to sponsored children living in marginal zones of major Colombian cities (Bogotá and Medellín) and in an indigenous community, Guambia, in the municipality of Silvia (Cauca).
